This is a joint post from Nomadic Labs, TriliTech & Functori.
On 12 April 2025 at about 6:00 UTC, the Calypso2 security upgrade went live on Etherlink Mainnet, in Etherlink block 10,453,254. This upgrade improves error handling of FA bridging transactions, which hardens the Etherlink sequencer against potential DDOS attacks. This upgrade includes only a security patch for the Calypso kernel and no other changes.
A failed transaction on Etherlink testnet alerted core engineers working on Etherlink to an issue that might have been able to temporarily stop the Etherlink sequencer. Although it is not clear if malicious users could use such transactions to implement a DDOS-style attack, the core development team saw an opportunity to improve Calypso’s error handling and proactively prevent such attack attempts.
There were no incidents on the Etherlink Mainnet, and even on Testnet, no assets were at risk.
This upgrade was carried out through Etherlink’s security governance process, which enables faster deployment of important changes compared to standard kernel upgrades—while still maintaining strong decentralization principles. Security upgrades require a quorum of 15% of the total Etherlink voting power to participate and 80% of that vote to be in favor of the proposal. We thank Tezos bakers for their active participation and support, which made this upgrade possible.
